When I went to see the new Masters of the Universe movie, I expected nostalgia. What I didn’t expect was to feel my entire childhood rushing back at me.
I grew up in a home that wasn’t easy. My father was an immigrant working whatever jobs he could find, and my mother was young, stressed, and overwhelmed. I spent most of my time outside — not because I wanted to be far from home, but because that’s where I learned to keep myself busy, keep myself safe, and keep myself entertained.
Looking back with today’s terminology, people might call parts of my childhood “abusive.” I never saw it that way. I still don’t. To me, it was discipline, survival, and parents doing the best they could with what they had.
But even in the middle of all that, I had one thing that felt like magic.
I had He‑Man.
I didn’t have Castle Grayskull. I didn’t have Battle Cat. I didn’t have Skeletor or the big playsets you’d see in commercials.
But I had one He‑Man figure — and somehow, that was enough.
He‑Man fought alongside my G.I. Joes, battled imaginary villains in the dirt outside, and gave me a world where strength, courage, and heroism were possible. When life felt heavy, He‑Man made it feel lighter. When things were chaotic, he gave me a story to escape into.
It’s funny… I always thought I had very little. But my neighbors and friends would tell me I had “a lot.” I didn’t understand it then. Now I do.
I had imagination. I had creativity. I had characters who made me feel powerful when I didn’t feel powerful in real life.
And that feeling — that spark — is exactly what came back to me in the theater.
It reminded me why I built Gallery of Collectible Décor & Icons in the first place. Not just to sell toys. Not just to display icons. But to create a space where memories live, where childhood still matters, and where the things that shaped us can be shared with others.
Now I Want to Hear From You
We all have that one thing from childhood that stayed with us.
Maybe it was He‑Man. Maybe it was Michael Jackson — I also saw the new MJ movie, and it unlocked a whole different set of memories. Maybe it was Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Barbie, Star Wars, or a song your parents played on repeat.
Whatever it was, I want you to share it.
